What To Do If You See a Snake in Sydney

Stay calm. Keep your distance. Keep your eyes on it.

The single most important thing you can do is maintain visual contact from a safe distance. A snake that's being watched usually stays put. A snake that disappears can turn a 20-minute job into an afternoon of searching sheds, garden beds, roof cavities, and stored materials.

If the snake moves under a bin, garden edging, furniture, or stored gear, find a position where it can still see you — without approaching it. Snakes are aware of much larger presences nearby, and a snake that knows you're there will generally hold still rather than try to flee.

What Not To Do

  • Don't try to catch or kill it. Most snake bites in Australia happen when people attempt this.

  • Don't try to move it with a broom, hose, shovel, or rake. Even non-venomous snakes can cause serious injury if mishandled, and venomous ones will defend themselves with speed you weren't expecting.

  • Don't corner it or block its movement. A cornered snake is a defensive one.

What To Do If You See a Snake

  1. Move people and pets away. Children and dogs are curious, and curious doesn't end well around snakes. Pets in particular tend to investigate, often with bad outcomes.

  2. Watch the snake from a safe distance. You don't need to be close. You just need to be able to tell us where it is when we arrive.

  3. If the snake is inside, contain it if you safely can. Close internal doors to limit its movement. Only do this if you can do it without approaching the snake. If you can't, leave the room, shut the door behind you, and call us.

  4. Call 0418 633 474. We'll dispatch a licensed snake catcher and stay on the phone to talk you through what to do until we arrive.

Are Snakes Aggressive?

Snakes are not aggressive by default. They don't approach people. They almost always choose escape over confrontation when given the chance.

Your job is simple: keep your distance, keep your eyes on the snake, and let us handle the rest.

The Most Common Snake We Remove

Across Sydney, the red-bellied black snake accounts for most of our call-outs. It's a venomous species commonly found near water, gardens, and suburban yards through the warmer months. Read more about red-bellied black snake removal.(internal link)

Warmer Months Mean More Snakes

Snake activity rises in spring and stays high through summer across Sydney. The same period is when people are outdoors more — in the garden, around the pool, entertaining, letting pets roam — which is why the warmer months produce most of our call-outs.
