Fear of Lizards Has a Name: Saurophobia

The fear of lizards is called saurophobia. It’s closely related to herpetophobia, a fear of reptiles in general.

It shows up in different ways. Some people simply feel their skin crawl when they spot a lizard on the fence. Others find it hard to function at home until they know the animal has gone. They’ll avoid the garden, keep the back door shut on a hot day, or check under the outdoor furniture before sitting down.

Whatever form it takes, it’s a genuine response and nothing to be embarrassed about. Lizards move fast, change direction without warning and have a habit of appearing where you least expect them. It’s no surprise they put people on edge.

For anyone whose fear is starting to limit their life, specific phobias are very treatable, and a GP or psychologist is a good place to start. In the meantime, the lizard in your backyard is a problem we can solve today.

Lizards We Remove Across Sydney

Water Dragon Removal

Eastern Water Dragons are one of the most common lizards we relocate. They’re usually young males pushed out of their home territory, and they’re drawn to backyard pools, ponds and creek lines.

Blue Tongue Lizard Removal

Blue tongue lizards like to shelter under sheds, decking, garden beds and rubbish piles. They’ll hiss and show their blue tongue when cornered, but it’s mostly bluff.

Goanna Removal

Lace Monitors, commonly called goannas, are Sydney’s largest lizards. They’re most often seen in suburbs that back onto bushland and can turn up on roofs, in chicken coops or in ceiling spaces. They’re the lizard people are most understandably nervous about.

Skinks, Geckos and Bearded Dragons

Smaller lizards occasionally find their way indoors or take up residence around the house. If one is causing you stress, we can help.

Sydney’s common backyard lizards are not venomous to people. That said, larger lizards like goannas have strong claws and a solid bite, and any lizard may defend itself if it feels trapped.

Why You Should Use a Licensed Lizard Catcher

You shouldn’t have to face it. If lizards make you uncomfortable, the last thing you need is to be crawling under the deck trying to catch one.

Injuries happen on both sides. People get scratched and bitten. Lizards drop tails, injure limbs or end up released somewhere they can’t survive.

The law protects them. All native lizards in NSW are protected. Relocation should be handled by someone licensed to do it.

How Our Lizard Removal Service Works

When you call, we’ll ask a few questions about the lizard and where it is. If you can safely take a photo, send it through, as it helps us identify the species before we arrive.

We’ll locate the animal, catch it humanely and release it into suitable habitat. You’re welcome to stay inside the whole time.

If it’s a small lizard that’s likely to leave on its own, we’ll let you know before you book.

What to Do While You Wait

  • Bring pets and children inside.

  • If the lizard is in the house, shut it in one room and block the gap under the door.

  • Watch where it goes only if you’re comfortable doing so.

  • Avoid chasing it or spraying it with a hose, which tends to drive it somewhere harder to reach.

Lizard Removal FAQs

Are lizards dangerous?
Sydney’s common backyard lizards are not venomous to people and won’t go out of their way to attack. Larger species like goannas can scratch or bite if handled or cornered.

Are lizards protected in NSW?
Yes. All native lizards in NSW are protected, which is why relocation should be carried out by a licensed wildlife handler.

Will a lizard leave on its own?
Sometimes. Small skinks and geckos often move on by themselves. Larger lizards that have found food, water and shelter, like a water dragon by a pool or a goanna raiding a chicken coop, are more likely to stay.

Can I move a blue tongue lizard myself?
We don’t recommend it. Handling can injure the lizard, and releasing it in the wrong place can leave it without shelter or food. A licensed handler will release it into suitable habitat.

Do you remove goannas?
Yes. Goanna removal is one of our most common lizard callouts, particularly in suburbs bordering bushland.

Is it silly to call someone about a lizard?
Not at all. Plenty of our callouts come from people who are frightened of lizards or simply don’t want one living around the house. Both are good reasons to call.

Your Comfort Matters

Living alongside wildlife is part of life in Sydney, but that doesn’t mean every lizard has to stay. If having one around the house is affecting how you feel at home, that’s reason enough to have it moved. We’ll handle it quickly, humanely and without any judgement.

This adult male Water Dragon was becoming too bold around a backyard swimming pool. There were 4 or 5 in total. It was a novelty at first, but the owners in the end wanted their pool back!
